Resided in:
College Station, Texas
Diana Sandoval Nelson, age 85, of College Station passed away Sunday, September 10, 2023.
Diana was born on April 5, 1938, to Juan Jose (JJ) and Dora Sandoval. Diana grew up in Cimarron, NM, and graduated from Cimarron High School in 1956. After graduation, she moved to Albuquerque and attended UNM.
Her career began at Kurtland AFB and she was a highly regarded secretary there, and she worked at various locations where Paul’s career found him as a researcher and scientist at Sandia Labs, Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Oak Ridge Laboratories in Tennessee, and Texas Tech in Lubbock.
Diana was also able to work with Paul in some of his project work and she served as the Editorial Assistant for Paul when he was the Editor in Chief of the Journal of Transport Theory and Statistical Physics.
Diana and Paul enjoyed entertaining friends and colleagues in their home and traveling with colleagues as work took them around the world. They also enjoyed substantial travel as a family together with their son, Kevin. In every country she visited, Diana searched to find the very best examples of chocolate she could find. Switzerland undoubtedly had the best in the world, as far as she was concerned.
When home in College Station, Diana enjoyed serving as a Docent for the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum.
Diana was preceded in death by her parents, several siblings who died before the age of 10 and then siblings who survived to adulthood, two brothers, Manuel and Pat, and one sister, Viola Sandoval Taylor.
Diana is survived by her husband of 59 years, Paul Nelson Jr., and son Kevin Nelson, both of College Station.
Funeral Service will be at 2:30 pm on Friday, September 15, 2023 with a time of visitation starting at 1:30 pm at Callaway-Jones Funeral Center in Bryan. Interment will be in College Station Memorial Cemetery.

Please accept our most heartfelt condolences on the loss of Ms. Nelson. With a smile, we will always remember the fun we had eating cheese with the Peddicord’s. Please know that we will be praying for peace and comfort for your entire family during this difficult time.
Paul and I have known one another for several decades as colleagues and friends. We met while he was on the faculty at TAMU and I was a Los Alamos researcher. Although we did not see one another frequently, my visits to College Station during the past 20 years have provided me the opportunity to get to know Diana. She and I shared stories of New Mexico. The three of us have had many laughs while sharing meals. Diana was always so warm and kind to me. She was a delight to be around. My condolences to Paul and the entire Nelson family.
We are so saddened to hear of Diana’s passing and offer our deepest condolences to Paul. We had a cherished relationship with both of them during and after our 5 years in the TAMU family. Diana’s humor was a shining beacon to anyone who knew her. Paul’s intellect and humanity far exceed that of most peers. Due to our current circumstances we can attend neither the Visitation nor the Funeral, but both Diana and Paul are in our thoughts and prayers.
We are all so saddened by the news of Aunt Dee’s passing. The time our family spent together any time Aunt Dee, Uncle Paul & Kevin were in Albuquerque will always be cherished. Her smile and laughter lit up the room. She will be missed. Our entire family sends love and prayers to Uncle Paul and Kevin. Love from Margaret Sandoval, John Sandoval, Matt Sandoval, Yvonne Schafer, and our families.
Amy, Jordy, Rainy, Evey, Abby and I are very sad to hear about Aunt Dee. She was very special to us. Her and Aunt Vi loved my family and they will always hold a special place in our hearts. Thinking of my uncle Paul and Kevin and sending love.
Oh no! She was such a sweet lady! REST WELL MY FRIEND! ✌❤️ the the family!!!
Dear Uncle Paul and Kevin,
I have tried emailing and calling Aunt Diana the past 6 to 8 months and then I just found her obituary here. My heart goes out to you both and I am sorry I didn’t get a chance to connect with her one last time. She was such a loving, sweet Aunt and I feel blessed that we connected at least a few times over the years. Great memories of spending time with here and Aunt Vi when they came to visit. I feel blessed to have met some of my Sandoval family thanks to them. May she rest in peace.
Love & Aloha
