On February 23, 2024, Carrol Dean Claycamp, our loving father, grandfather, brother and life-long educator passed away at age 89.  Carrol was born in Western Kansas in June of 1934 at the peak of the Depression and Dust Bowl.  He was the youngest of 7 brothers with an older and a younger sister.  Carrol certainly lived the adage “Do what you love and you won’t work a day in your life.”  He began as a brick layer’s helper during childhood and continued to contribute to the construction industry until he turned 80 years of age.  Carrol earned an undergraduate degree in Architectural Engineering in 1958 at Kansas State University and began teaching at the Collegiate level. He found a 2nd calling in education and moved with his wife and 4 children to College Station, TX to continue his education at Texas A&M University.  He received an M.S. in Building Construction in 1967 and served as the Director of TAMU Architecture and Engineering Center from 1967 to 1968.  Additionally, Carrol served as the Department Head in the College of Architecture Construction Science Department from 1981-1984, authored several publications, served as faculty advisor, held numerous local and national appointments in professional societies, and then retired in 2000 achieving the title of Professor Emeritus. Throughout his appointment at TAMU, Carrol continued to consult and collaborate with many people in the industry.  He contributed to the community by consulting with homeowners, churches and private businesses and provided counsel as an Expert Witness.

Carrol Dean was preceded in death by his wife Merne Ardis and is survived by one sister Dorothy Eisenbarth of Gilbert, AZ, daughter Coni Cheesman and son-in-law John Cheesman, daughter Christy Northcliffe, daughter Marsha Leavitt, daughter Cathy Bounds and son-in-law Robert Bounds, grandchildren Nicholas Leavitt and wife Kelsey Leavitt, Jennifer Lopez and husband Enrique Lopez, Matthew Leavitt and wife Lara Leavitt, Amy Melton and husband Jared Melton, Kat Leavitt, Thomas Northcliffe, Emily Northcliffe, Taylor Bounds, Bryson Bounds, Clayton Bounds and wife Ariel Bounds, great-grandchild Astrid Leavitt as well as 2 additional great-grandchildren expected soon.

Carrol is best remembered for his generosity, his devotion to his family, Aggie basketball, teaching and solving structural problems, and his desire to play a friendly game of pool with family and friends.  The family of Carrol Claycamp would like to offer a special thank you to Sabina Sauseda for serving as his “Girl Friday”, Bianeau Calixte for being his “Angel on Earth” and the countless other caring individuals that provided fellowship and assistance to the Claycamp family.

Family and friends will gather at 2pm on Sunday May 26, 2024 for Carrol’s Celebration of Life at Yesterdays Bar and Grill, his favorite pool hall.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks those that wish to donate to the charity of their choice in memory of Carrol.

  1. Mr. Claycamp I feel truly blessed to have met you and your beautiful wife Merne also you’re a beautiful family. Thank you for trusting me to take care of Marne. Thank you for always making me feel like part of the family your ” fifth daughter”. I enjoyed our talks, especially when we would use Google
When we weren’t sure about a subject, we were talking about. You and your family will always be in my heart. Love You’re fifth daughter Jackie

  2. We knew Carrol and Merne as square dancers, starting in the 1970s. Merne faithfully helped Chester Jones, age 85+ in the 1970s, get to the square dances. She always brought the best fresh vegetables as snacks. Carrol, architecturally knowledgable, noticed and mentioned interesting construction details about the old TX dance hall, La Bahia Turn Verein, where we square danced once each spring. We remember meeting some of their children. The Claycamps were the gentlest, most loving, pleasant to be around, generous couple we had the privilege to know.

  3. My. thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Claycamp Family on the passing of Carrol. I have had the honor of knowing Carrol and Mernem since Sept 1963 when I arrived in Manhattan, Kansas from Manhattan New York ! Then when I arrived in ( which stretched out to 58 years ) College Station for one year(which stretched out into 56 years ) – I was delighted to learn that Carrol and Merne and their wonderful family were also joining the faculty at the same time. Carrol and Merne are both wonderful people as are their childrenn and grand children. We will miss Carro and Merne greatly.
    Love to all
    George J Mann
