Amador was born in San Benito, Texas. His parents are Melecio and Guadalupe Cantu of Harlingen, Texas. He married his high school sweetheart and love of his life Norma Chapa in 1963. Amador served in the US Air Force for 8 years and was stationed in England, Germany and Abilene, Tx.
