Judy Brackett, 88, of Bryan, passed away Tuesday at the home of her son. A visitation will be held Friday, the 14th, between 4 and 6 pm at Callaway-Jones Funeral Home in Bryan. A memorial service will be held Saturday, the 15th, at 11 am at McCurdy’s Funeral Home in her hometown of Lockhart.
Judy was born in Uhland, Texas to James C. and Edna Holcomb Evans and grew up in Lockhart. She began working in a flower shop Austin at the age of 16, and then was engaged in a variety of occupations in many different places. She was elected and served as Treasurer of Hays County from 1975 to 1979 and worked in bookkeeping and real estate in, and around. central Texas for many years.
Always a strong and independent women and a champion of women’s rights, she had served as an officer in a local chapter of the American Legion Auxiliary, as Past President of the Business and Professional Women’s Club, and as an organizer and Past President of the local AARP Chapter in San Marcos. She had been a member of the Eastern Star Order, the Sons of Hermann and, in 1996, was appointed to serve on the first Advisory Board for the South Austin Senior Activity Center. She later served as President of that center.
She was preceded in death by her parents and by her brothers, James, Jeff and Ben, by her sisters Alma, Gladys and Edna and by her husbands Woodrow Young and Robert Brackett.
She is survived by her brothers and their spouses Dick and Mary Evans of Victoria, Bill and Linda Evans of San Antonio and her sister Mildred Evans Anderson of Lockhart. She is also survived by her sons and daughter-in-laws Bill and Virginia Young of Lampasas and Quinn and Carol Brackett of College Station. Judy was highly involved with her five grandchildren and their spouses and ten great-grandchildren.

Judy was a great Lady. It was an honor
to have known her.
