Herbert Edward Schleider, 87, of Bryan, passed away Sunday, February 15, 2009, at Sherwood Health Care in Bryan. Funeral Services are set for 11 a.m. Friday at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in College Station, with the Rev. Erich Schaefer officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Prairie Lea Cemetery in Brenham. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Callaway-Jones Funeral Home in Bryan.
Herbert Edward Schleider was born to Hans and Carrie Schleider October 17, 1921 In Brenham, Texas. As he used to say, he was “born in Brenham and raised in Texas”. He was a member of the Texas A-M class of 1942 graduating after the war in 1947 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agricultural Engineering. After discovering he was unable to serve in the military due to a bad knee he joined the Merchant Marines and served his country transporting everything from bombs to troops during the Second World War. He married his first wife, Mary Lucille Gregor in 1947. She died of Polio in 1949. In 1951 he married Bernice Gregor. The union lasted more than 50 years and was blessed with two sons Herbert Jr. (Skip) and Paul. Herb passed away Sunday February 15, 2009
Herb was a longtime member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church. He Enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a charter member of the local chapter of the Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) and a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association (NRA).
Herb was an engineer, surveyor, electrician and general contractor for most of his life. He worked for several local companies including Mid Brazos Valley Industries, H and A Construction, Crimpomatic and Brinkman Corporation before finally starting his own company, Schleider Engineering, in the early eighties. He designed and constructed several buildings in the local area.
He was preceded in death by his parents, both wives, and his son Skip. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Lyla Schleider of Bryan; sister, Alice Marie Holle, of Brenham; sister and brother-in-law, Marjorie and John Darrah, of Palo Cedro, CA.; sister-in-law, Velma Fathauer, of Brenham; Two step grandchildren Ashley Gage and William Bates; one great granddaughter, Jewelia (Angel) Gentry, and numerous nieces and nephews

Herb was a great man with a quick wit. I remember sitting next to him at the CCA Banquet and laughing and having a great time with him.
I am so sorry to hear of his passing. My sincerest condolences.
We are saddened to hear of Herb’s passing. Our dad, Harold Bockhorn, and Herb were members of the Bible Study Class at TAMUwhich eventually became the beginning of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church. Dad had very fond memories of Herb and their time together at A-M.
