Happy Birthday to the U.S. Navy

Anyone who was born in the past 100 years cannot remember a time when the U.S. Navy did not exist. But it’s been around far longer than that. In fact, our U.S. Navy considers its official birthday as October 13, 1775. It was in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where our naval service was born. Online sources note that the United States was given a Continental Navy on that date in 1775 by authorizing “the procurement, fitting out, manning, and dispatch of two armed vessels to cruise in search of munitions ships supplying the British Army in America.

Forty-four years ago, Admiral Elmo R. Zumwalt, then Chief of Naval Operations, set aside the date for all members of the active naval forces and reserves, retirees and dependents to celebrate, “to enhance a greater appreciation of our Navy heritage, and to provide a positive influence toward pride and professionalism in the naval service.”

Many Naval heroes abound in our history books (and online); John Paul Jones was commander during the American Revolutionary War; George Dewey, first Admiral of the Navy was a hero of the Battle of Manila Bay in the Spanish-American War; Lillian E. Fishburne is the first African-American female to become a Rear Admiral; former U.S. Presidents Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford, and John F. Kennedy all served.

We’re fortunate that young men and women today are still excited about becoming a part of this special branch of the service. Some of them are preparing for service by studying as part of the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets. Others are in ROTC programs in high schools around the country.

What is in the heart of a young person that makes them want to join today’s U.S. Navy?

How many of these Navy personnel do you recognize by name? Grace Hopper (computing genius) was a Rear Admiral in the Navy Reserve; naval aviator, Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr., was killed in World War II; Admiral Hyman Rickover is considered “Father of the Nuclear Navy”; Naval Academy graduate and Dallas Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach is a Vietnam veteran; actors Henry Fonda; Jack Lemmon; Ernest Borgnine, Humphrey Bogart; and entertainers Johnny Carson, Don Rickles, and MC Hammer. Gause, Texas, native and Grammy-nominated singer, Ruthie Foster was in the Navy and toured with the U.S. Navy Band!
