Arlan Bolton McSwain

Arlan Bolton McSwain, age 91, of Bryan passed away on Tuesday, April 3, 2018. A funeral service will be held on Friday, April 6, 2018 at 11am at Bright Light Freewill Baptist Church in College Station. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Arlan was born in Houston, Texas on February 17, 1927 to Guy Clayton McSwain and Irma Lavelle McSwain. He joined the Navy right out of high school and served honorably for two years as a Radarman Third Class during WWII. Arlan then attended Texas A&M and graduated in 1950 with a degree in Agronomy and Animal Husbandry. He married Mary Elizabeth Powers in 1951 while employed by the Soil Conservation Service in New Mexico. Arlan then worked for Texas A&M in Tunisia for several years before beginning a 40-year career as an agronomist for USAID. He had the pleasure of working alongside Nobel Prize recipient Dr. Norman Borlaug as part of the green revolution in North Africa. Arlan loved his family, traveling, and spending hours in his shop on woodworking projects.
Arlan was preceded in death by his parents, sister Milda Faye, and wife, “Liz” McSwain.
He is survived by his wife of 12 years, Carol, daughter April Allen of Austin, and sons Michael and wife Linda, and Guy and wife Leigh, both of Houston, seven grandchildren: Brad Allen, Aaron Allen, Andrew McSwain, Michael McSwain, Megan McSwain Grogan, Hayley McSwain, and Claire McSwain Robinson; and one great-grandchild, Elizabeth Jean McSwain.
