Robert Luther Sanders, Sr., 86, retired Free Will Baptist pastor entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, September 9, 2008. Services are set for 10 a.m. Friday, September 12, at the Fellowship Free Will Baptist Church, 1228 W. Villa Maria Rd. in Bryan. Burial will follow in the Rest-Ever Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, September 11, at Callaway-Jones Funeral Home located at 3001 S. College Ave.
Robert Luther Sanders was born on May 18, 1922 and raised in eastern Kentucky. He proudly served his country for 6 years in the U. S. Navy, surviving Pearl Harbor and the Pacific conflict aboard the aircraft carrier, U. S. S. Enterprise. His name can be found on the Brazos Valley Veterans Memorial wall at the Veterans Memorial Park in College Station.
He graduated from Free Will Baptist Bible College, Nashville, Tenn. and Bob Jones University, Greenville, S.C. to prepare for the ministry. Rev. Sanders pastored churches in Pleasant View, T.N.; Florence, S.C.; Cordova, Ala.; Monett, Mo.; Garner, N.C. He and his first wife served as Free Will Baptist home missionaries in Hawaii for over 21 years, establishing a thriving church on the island of Oahu in Hawaii.
He pastored Cornerstone FWB Church in College Station and North Zulch FWB Church prior to his retirement from over 50 years in the ministry. He was a proud member of the Rotary Club of Aggieland and a faithful supporter of the Hope Crisis Pregnancy center.
He was preceded in death by his first wife of 50 years, Helen Sanders, his parents and his brother.
He is survived by his second wife, Virginia Sanders, his daughter, Brenda and husband, Wayne Spruill of Nashville, Tenn.; son, Bobby and wife, Mary F. Sanders of Bryan; six grandchildren, Kevin and wife, Heather Spruill of Raleigh, N.C., Carol Holland of Nashville, Beth and husband Eddie Colf of Birmingham, Ala., Carl and wife Cynthia Spruill, Matthew Sanders and Grant Sanders, all of Bryan-College Station; 5 great-grandchildren, Ashley Holland, Kalia, Brayden and Peyton Spruill and Noah Spruill.
Pallbearers are, Carl Spruill, Kevin Spruill, Eddie Colf, John Vaughn, Tony Patranella, Matthew Sanders and Grant Sanders.
Honorary pallbearers are, members of the Rotary Club of Aggieland and all ordained ministers of the Free Will Baptist denominations.
