James Orion McIntyre, Jr., 84, passed away Sunday, September 7, 2008 at his home in Bryan. A memorial service is set for 2 p.m., Thursday, September 11, at Callaway-Jones Funeral Chapel in Bryan with Rev. Harral Dunnam officiating. A private burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Roans Prairie at a later date.
He was born in Roans Prairie, Texas. After graduating from Navasota High School, he enlisted in military service, achieving the rank of PFC for the US Air Force, 20th division, Topographic Engineers. His career was spent in Houston where he worked for ARMCO Steel. In Houston, he was named ‘Man of the Year’ by the Park Place Methodist Church, where he and his wife, Betty, worked with junior high youth and were recognized for their commitment to young people.
He was a member of the Bryan Noon Lions Club and a charter member of the Trias Foundation in Kosse, TX. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Bryan and the 2 X 2 Sunday School Class. He enjoyed travel, spending summers in Colorado, growing exotic flowers and visiting with friends who appreciated his sense of humor and optimistic outlook.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Lou McIntyre; son, Robert Lewis McIntyre; sisters, Marie Russell and Melba Dyer and niece, Myra Dyer.
Survivors include his son James O. McIntyre, III and wife, Sharon of Columbus, Texas; grandson, James O. McIntyre, IV, and wife, Melissa of Bellville, Texas; step-grandson, Shane Theriot of Columbus, Texas and step-granddaughter Tammy Schindler and husband, Wade of Columbus, Texas; great-grandsons, Jake and Connor of Bellville, Texas; step-great grandchildren, Keardon, Bryce and Lainey Schindler of Columbus, Texas.
