Don Oliver, longtime Texas newspaper man and two time sports information director at Baylor University died on August 1, 2009. A memorial service will be held at Fellowship Baptist Church in Brenham, Texas, on Tuesday, August 4, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. with interment at 3:30 p.m. at Kirk Cemetery in Kirk, Texas.
Born on July 15, 1926, he grew up in Corpus Christi, Texas, the son of Tom and Karene Oliver. He graduated from Corpus Christi High School and attended Corpus Christi Junior College, Southwestern Louisiana Institute, and Baylor University. He was accepted into the Naval Air Corps in 1943 and due to illness received a medical discharge in 1945.
On November 6, 1950 he married the former Margaret Hering in Lubbock, Texas. They were married for 57 years before she passed away on November 16, 2007. They had two children, Penny King of College Station, Texas and her husband Clark, and Mark Oliver of Georgetown, Texas and his wife Pam. He had six grandchildren, Rusty King and wife Becky of Austin, Justin, Brandon, Jordan, Lauren and Kristen Oliver of Georgetown and three great grand children, Lyndsey and Logan King of Austin and Sean Oliver of Georgetown. He is survived by one sister, June Cox of Cypress, Texas.
A deacon in the Baptist Church, he was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Brenham where he was an active participant until his death.
A newspaper sports columnist for many years, Don served as editor of Golf World Magazine in the late 1950’s. Golf was his love and he never forgot his days of traveling the professional golf tour with legends like Tommy Bolt, Arnold Palmer, Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson. Sports were the foundation of his professional career, and through the years he was fortunate to become close friends with NFL great Sammy Baugh.
