Priscilla Matthews Gougler

Priscilla Matthews Gougler
May 21, 1922 – February 25, 2018

Priscilla Gougler, loving wife and mother, passed from this life on February 25, 2018. A service will be held at 1PM Monday, March 5th, 2018 in the Bluebonnet Chapel of Callaway-Jones Funeral and Cremation Centers Bryan-College Station. Private interment will follow at a later time.

Priscilla was born in Dayton, Texas to J.F. and Stella Matthews. Her love of sports became apparent at an early age, and as a self-proclaimed “Tomboy”, she preferred sandlot ball and tennis rackets to dolls and dresses. She also played trumpet in the band and graduated as valedictorian from Dayton High School in 1940, and went on to attend SMU in Dallas, graduating in 1943 with a Bachelor of Science degree. In the summer of 1949, while on vacation from her job as a laboratory technician in San Antonio, she visited a dude ranch near Bandera, Texas. There she found her “tall Texas cowboy” and future husband, Doyle Gougler. They were married July 7, 1951, and settled in Houston. In 1960, they moved to College Station where she and Doyle lived out the remainder of their lives.

Priss was an amazing, involved mom to her sons Phil and Robert. As a Cub Scout leader and Little League volunteer, she made sure all of her sons’ friends were well looked after. She eagerly followed both sons’ pursuits through high school and college.

Priscilla also found time to have a career outside the home, working part time for H&R Block as a tax consultant. She also loved working registration at Texas A&M and handing out Aggie Rings because it allowed her to spend time with students.

Living in the shadow of Texas A&M, Priss soon became a diehard Aggie fan. She loved Aggie football and began attending all home games throughout the 60s and 70s. In the 80s, she expanded her sports interests to baseball, softball, Men’s and Women’s basketball, soccer, and tennis. She and her 3 closest friends began travelling to all the out of town Aggie football games since their husbands didn’t care anything about it. They kept this up for close to 20 years. At age 81 in 2003, Priscilla attended the “hurricane” game vs Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, her last out of town football game. She never once left her seat to seek shelter.

Priscilla is preceded in death by her husband Doyle, her parents, and brothers Leroy, Merrit and Frank. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Phil & Jody Gougler of College Station; son and daughter-in-law Robert & Keather Gougler of Murphy, NC; grandchildren: J.P. Gougler and wife Amy, Kate Gougler and Alanis Gougler; great granddaughter Chloe Gougler; cousins, nieces, nephews and their families.

The family truly appreciates The Isle at Watercrest allowing Priss and Doyle the opportunity to live out the remainder of their lives together in the same apartment, although they required different levels of care. We wish to thank the compassionate care and support provided by everyone from the Isle at Watercrest, and the staff at Encompass Home Health and Hospice.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Encompass Home Health and Hospice.
