Johanna Rister

Johanna Genevieve Rister of College Station, TX, formerly of Placedo-Bloomington (south of Victoria) and Round Rock, died Monday, February 12, 2018.  She was born in Round Rock, TX, on August 6, 1928, to Edward and Hedda Burklund.  Johanna graduated from Round Rock High School in 1946 and graduated from Nixon-Clay Commercial College in Austin in 1947. She married Kenneth Rister in 1949 and they moved from Round Rock to the Placedo-Bloomington area in 1956, where they farmed until 1997.  While in Victoria, she worked for First Victoria National Bank, Union Carbide, and Victoria Electric Cooperative.  In 1999, Kenneth and Johanna moved to College Station to live with their son and daughter-in-law.

Johanna enjoyed working in the yard and baking and cooking in general.  She loved her grandchildren Karl (and wife Angela) and Krista and, more recently, her great-granddaughter Kenzie.  Family was very important to her; she cherished the time she spent with her family and her many nieces and nephews.

Johanna was baptized at Palm Valley Lutheran Church in Round Rock.  Later, she was a member of the Placedo Brethren Church.  After moving to College Station, Johanna became an active member of Peace Lutheran Church.  She enjoyed the fellowship with church members and working with the pastoral staff.  The time spent with her friends at church were the highlight of her weeks.  We are thankful to all who welcomed her and included her in their activities at church and in the community.

Johanna is survived by her son Edward, daughter-in-law Dianne, grandson Karl (and his wife Angela and daughter Kenzie) of Cedar Park and granddaughter Krista of McKinney, plus sister Jeanette Peterson of Round Rock, and in-laws Helen and W.M. Mirtsching of Dallas and Evelyn Dutton of Wylie, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.  Johanna was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Rister; parents Edward and Hedda Berkman Burklund; and father and mother-in-law Milton and Lillie May Walker Rister of Granger/Placedo.

A visitation will be held Friday, February 16, 2018, from 5:00 – 7:00 pm at Callaway-Jones Funeral Home, 3001 S. College Avenue, Bryan, TX 77801.  The funeral service will be held 2:00 pm Saturday, February 17, 2018, at Peace Lutheran Church, 2201 Rio Grande, College Station, TX 77845.  Interment will be held 2:00 pm Sunday, February 18, 2018, at the Palm Valley Lutheran Church Cemetery, 2500 E. Palm Valley Blvd, Round Rock, TX 78665.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the organ fund at Peace Lutheran Church in College Station.
